there can be millions of reasons for that.

1 - machanical failures & malfunctions in the motors , r/w heads, arms & coils inside.
2 - electrical failures in the circuitary (burnt wage scenes... ) (sudden power failures wage can result in this )

3 - human erros ( drop the HDD wage careless wada, the shock can make tiny differances in the alignments which can cause damages to the platters. ( the gap between head & platter is about 6 micro meters & if they touch the platters may get scratched & damaged )

4 - kumbi kaama ( no this is true, believe me. many people keep food around the PC which attracts ants, & they get insides the PC because its a warm dry place . the ants love the HDD to be their homes, (there is a sponge like thing between the electric circuit & the hdd cover where ants pretty much like to stay in ) so when they walk on the circuit when HDD is powered on their bodies make it short circuit )

5 - boot sector failures & damages (un recoverable most of the times )

When HDD is burnt - its very unlikely that you can recover data. Sometimes you can replacethe circuit board with a similar HDD & can see if it works. But if somethign is wron with the sealed part then sorry.com Coz if someone opens up a HDD then its useless.

In other words, shit happens.

What we should learn is, be ready when it does. Kela wunata passe wedak nehe machang, karana deyak karala tiyaganna one kelawenna kalin... (Hehe maath ithin keepa wathawak kela welama tamayi paadama igena gatthe... Had to learn the hard way....) Ithin pana epa kiyala important data monawa harima tiyana ewa backup korapan machooo... CD, DVD, (or any other media) wala pihita tamayi ithin!
