Shops were closed and black flags were raised in predominantly Buddhist Middeniya town in the South last week to protest against a Christian fundamentalist sect engaged in proselytizing despite the strong opposition of Buddhists in the area.
This sect – Narahanpita Divine Council - is suspected of having strong links with the LTTE. Members of several similar Christian sects have been arrested in recent times for helping the Tigers by various means.
Over 8000 people demonstrated against the so-called Divine Council which had fraudulently purchased a block of land from an elderly woman, for the purpose of unethically converting Buddhists to Christianity.
Organizer of the Hela Thurunu Saviya organized the protest rally.
