This happened to one of my friends.

His Computer is a P IV 2.4 GHz with 256+128 MB RAM, 32MB Rage VGA and a 40 GB HDD. Win XP installed.

When trying to boot the computer, at the middle of the booting process the computer re-boots and starts all over again.
And some times there in no signal to the monitor. but the HDD LED is on. we have to re-boot the computer to get it out of that state.

We checked RAM and VGA for loose-connections, and even cleaned the RAM and VGA slots, but didn't help.

Anyone know what this problem is?

Probably a RAM issue has corrupted the data in the hard disk, which is loaded at startup. You better check for RAM. Download Memtest86+ 3.0 (this is the preferred version) ISO, burn to a CDRW disk and boot from it. It will automatically check for RAM. Leave it as long as possible. If you see any errors (they show up in the bottom of the screen in red), you have no choice but to replace the RAM.

Ya I also think you better try this before doin anythin else...Try 1 RAM at a time with different RAM slots...Cos it also can be something wrong with the RAM slots...Try and see...

Well, just because one RAM gives the same result doesn't mean it's a problem with the RAM. Your files are already corrupted because of one or both faulty RAMs. You need to reinstall the OS anyways. It's always better to try Memtest86+ as I suggested earlier. My dad's PC had the same problem. It was one of the two RAMs causing the problem. Memtest detected errors.

That's if the whole RAM is faulty. Problems in a specific area of RAM (it could only be 1kB of 1GB or 900MB of 1GB) are do not trigger POSTing alarms.
