Well, I told you that you will be on your own after replacing the cables :D

Anyway, I can suggest you this:

Install the 80 wire cable; then go into safe mode.

Uninstall hard disk controllers and also the hard disks (I mean in device manager). Reboot normally. See what happens :)

OK, I'll try it. Thanks.

80 wire cables are more reliable than 40 wire cables (as far as I know). They have 'extra' ground wires to prevent interference and data corruption.
I was going to buy a new HDD and I thought a 80 Wire cable would be best. :(

Yako, 33MBps vs. 133MBps (theoretically, but at least it gets to 70 or more MBps practically)

So stop being such a n00b and don't ask for my help AGAIN! :frown:

Thanks but this doesn't solve my problem :(
You couldn't still get it solved? :S

At least is the hard disk detected at the POST time properly, when it is connected via the 80-wire cable? If yes, then this is a software problem.

I'm pretty sure if you reinstall Windows, it will work.

But it is the last resort, and only if you want to go through with the tediousness of reinstalling everything. Now sure if a repair install would fix it though. But worth a try, eh?

Yes the HDD is detected, and I can get the computer booted in to the Safe Mode (with PIO only mode). The problem is with the DMA Mode.
I tried uninstalling the drivers. But didn't work :(
    I should try re-installing windows.
