Dr Kumudu Wickramasinghe 38 years old from National Hospital of Sri Lanka, is diagnosed with ‘Acute Myeloid Leukaemia’, a type of cancer of the blood since April 2018. He received his initial treatement in Sri Lanka and went to Cristian Medical College Vellore India for further chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant as this facility is not available in Sri Lanka. But unfortunately the matched unrelated donor was not available at the correct time, it was decided to give 3 cycles of HiDAC chemotherapy only.
He was apperantly well for about 3 months but again relapsed with the disease and currently under treatement at CMC hispital Vellore, receiving intensive salvage chemotherapy since January 1st 2019 and awaiting bone marrow transplant in mid February.
A graduate of the University of Sri Jayawardanapura and an alumnus of Royal College Kumudu has served at his utmost best to save the lives of paediatric as well as adult patients. Above all he was a dedicated doctor for the poor having assisted in the developement of a new hospital facility for rural patients in Nuwara Eliya and earned praise from local communities and the Sri Lankan media for his philanthropy. Attached is the estimated cost for the ‘Bone Marrow Transplant’.
