My HDD (Hitachi 250GB) has a single Bad Sector. just one 4KB block.

Since bad sectors can't be 'cured', what can I do to keep the system running and not make it worse?

Well! I had a 900MB something HDD with few bad sectors,
I created a small partition contains the bad sector and I did hide that partition,
You can also give it a try :)

I'll try that
how much space should I reserve before and after the block of the bad sectors?

Locate the area where the bad sector resides..that's 63084MB.. create a small partition say! 300MB starting from few blocks prior to the location (say 62900MB) u identified as the bad sector

this is a recommended too.But I advice you to not use 3rd party tools to check your valuable system and fuzz over. Use a badsector remover. You can download this @ vendors website.

    Do a Full Format.
If it doesn't solve the problem, Create two partitions excluding the damaged area. (one partition before the damaged area and the other partition after). It will solve the problem.

However in future avoid hard shutdowns (switching off power from the power button) and minimize the number of times you format the hard disk. And also, do frequent checkdisk scans (chkdsk) to ensure that the hard disk is free of damaged blocks.
