I'm planning to buy a laptop soon. You can read about that at the following thread & comment there too as you wish. :D

At the moment, we're using our desktop computer which is in the room. After buying the laptop, that computer may be move out to somewhere else. What I want to know is any good methods & tips about networking the desktop computer with the laptop, so both can access Internet using the current SLT ADSL connection.

Please consider the following facts too.

    - The desktop computer may be moved from the upper floor to the lower one.
    - The door of my room is almost all day closed, because I value my freedom a lot. So either you're describing about wired or wireless networking, please consider that fact too.
    - Wired or wireless. Pros & Cons. Better method considering the scenario.
    - If someone cut the power to the ADSL router (assuming both desktop & laptop are networked like that, if possible), I'm in my room will lose the Internet connectivity. I don't need such interruptions. So, it's better if I can implement a solution which will address these facts & issues.

I'm reading about home networking in the Internet too. But also thought that ask from Sri Lankans who might give me a feasible solution might be great. Any suggestions, advices, tips & tricks will be very useful to me.

well you can connect your PC with wired connection & connect laptop with wifi connection ( assuming you have wifi enabled router). but the problem if somebody switch off router you will loose Internet connection. If you can move router into your room then you can connect your desktop PC with Wifi connection.( you may need to buy wifi dongle for your desktop PC)
either way you can share Internet connection same time

I just got this idead. What about this?. At the moment, a splitter used to connect to the Internet & connect the telephone to the SLT line. So, what if we use another splitter & connect it to the current splitter & use the new splitter to connect both desktop & laptop. Or replace the current splitter with a new one which has three sockets & connect it to the wall. I don't know whether I described it clearly. & not so sure whether it's possible or not.

    Thanks

You cannot split ur phone line more than one time to connect internet. Splitting doesn't mean anything regarding separate ur internet connection into multiple ways. We are using splitter to separate certain bands (adsl,Cable tv and phone line) in ur analogue wired telephone line. The only way u can split ur internet connection by using a router.

As i figured the best way is to buy ADSL wireless+modem and router which can cover 300m area (equipped with two antennas). Then u may place it in ur room somewhere near to the downstairs, bcz unless otherwise u will not get the maximum signal strength to ur desktop.

Although u need to buy wireless PCI card as well for ur Desktop.....
    Enjoy ur privacy........ :p

See the below image for my new plan. Thanks

I guess it's possible to implement the following one. Need comments on that.
& thanks for the details about splitter.
hehe.. There are reasons why I'm very concern about my freedom & privacy.

OK.. Now the previous plan has been changed a bit. We will move the desktop out of my room, but it will be placed on the same floor as the laptop. So, we don't have to worry about communicate between two floors. Assuming the following implementation is correct, I guess I need to buy a "ADSL wireless router", so I can connect the desktop using an Ethernet cable & the laptop using a wireless connection. I guess, I need to buy one with "802.11n" for better performance. Right??

& also, I'd like to know any tips & tricks (security, performance, etc)
