A full season has been estimated to cost about $60  million for 10 episodes, which is a lot but still substantially less  than a "blockbuster"-type movie. The last Avengers movie had a budget of  ~$280 million for about 2.5 hours of programming and the last Harry  Potter movie cost about ~$250 million with a similar run time. $60  million for 10 hours of programming is a bargain in comparison. A  show like "Game of Thrones" is a huge draw for HBO's subscriber base.  It's an investment and obviously they're getting their money's worth on  it or it wouldn't keep getting renewed.
