Questions How much you do overtime in Software Engineering?

Starting from me. Current company that I started, only few weeks..,
If developers don't stay at least upto 7-8 PM, CEO is not going to be happy. Day is starting at 8AM (not flexible)
AS FAR AS I KNOW.

Is this common in IT?

To answer the OP's question, No...this is not common..i mean for a ceo to expect you to stay until 7,8 even if there's no work, then that's not somethinf happening in everywhere...as a matter of fact, our ceo doesn't even know about our work times and stuff. Also the fixed 8 AM work start time is also not common..usually there's flexible time, or a grace time period to start work, like from 8-10 etc.

But it is very common to expect long hours of work...you can't come at 8 and leave at 5 in a typical software company..the work is stressful and you face unexpeted issues most of the times..so you have to work long hours to catch up with the estimations..

Where I have worked we usually stay around 9 hours a day, 8 for working and 1 hour for lunch.
Usually start at 8 or 9 and leave at 5 or 6PM.
When there are release pressure we have work evenings and weekends, that's maybe dozen time a year.

It's difficult to attract/retain talent if the employees are not happy

WTF you have to work around 12 hours per day. as per my knowledge, it is called modern slavery
