We all know about how James Watt and his steam engine laid the foundation for the industrial revolution. But it could have happened in 50 AD. The Greek philosopher Hero of Alexandria discovered the hero engine, which could convert the heat source into a moving object using a steam engine. Sadly, he could not use that knowledge into something useful; hence, the invention was forgotten in time.
This fantastic demonstration by Professor David Grier of New York University, Department of Physics, explains how the Hero engine works.
