General and his Secretary arrested

The Military Police that arrested General Sarath Fonseka has also arrested his Secretary Senaka Arnold Haripriya Silva.
Commanding Officer of the Army’s Colombo Division Major General Sumith Manawadu had ordered the Military Police personnel who carried out the arrest.
The Military Police had forcibly entered into General Fonseka’s office where he was at a discussion with several political leaders. A senior Ministary Polcie officer who had walked in to the office had informed the general that he had received orders to arrest him. The General had responded saying that he could not be arrested. Major General Manawadu had walked into the room and shouted at the Military Police personnel to arrest the General saying, “What are you fellows looking at drag this fellow by his neck.” Seeing the General’s Secretary in the room, the Major General had said, “Here is the other fellow. Take him as well.”
The AFP photographer who had taken photographs of the General’s arrest was also attacked by the Military Police personnel before confiscating his camera equipment.
Major General Sumith Manawadu was the officer in charge of Mullaitivu during the Eelam War IV and he was transferred to the Army headquarters in Colombo by then Army Chief General Sarath Fonseka as punishment for issuing wrong orders to the ground troops, which resulted in the death of 117 soldiers in combat. The Major General has since been angry with the General.
Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa knew of this rift and used Major General Manawadu for several operations against General Fonseka. It was Major General Manawadu who also played the role of Commanding Officer in “Operation Trans Asia.”
