How to connect two PCs through a LAN cable

can someone please explain me how to connect my desktop PC n laptop through a LAN cable without any hub, switch or router. My OS is windows7.

buy a patch cable.
plug one end to the PC and the other to the laptop.
then you have to share the folder.
disable the firewall in the win7 machine.

you only need a crossover cable. what you need is just go to any computer shop and ask for a crossover network cable and they will get you one and paid for it and go home, plug each end to each of your computers. then set the ip address for one to 192.168.0.1 and the other to 192.168.0.2. as for the network mask, just use the suggested 255.255.255.0 and ignore the gateway since you are not using it for online anyway. then you can start sharing files and transfer files between two computers.
