How do I download a song without it being played in another tab??

use firefox with Video DownloadHelper addon...
Then u can download the song while it's playing

If you are talking about a normal audio file (i.e MP3) then right click on that link, then you'll see an option like Save Link As / Save Target as (or something similar depending on the browser). Use that option to save the file on to your hard disk without playing/opening it on a different tab. It works for all file types.
