Sri Lanka will lose its ICC membership from the year 2012 if the proposed changes to the constitution are adopted at the Executive Committee of the ICC to be held in Hong Kong from 26th to 30th July.

The new amendments are intended to strengthen the ICC constitution and are aimed at minimizing political interference in cricket affairs. As such, the Executive Committee of the ICC would get powers to suspend any country that does not hold elections to elect administrative bodies for cricket democratically but continue to have a body appointed by the government.

This is the process followed by international sports bodies such as International Olympic Committee (IOC), International Football Federation (FIFA) and International Rugby Union and recently full member status of Sri Lanka's rugby union was stripped after it failed to conduct board elections in accordance with IRU constitution.

Elections to elect an administrative body for Sri Lanka Cricket has not been held for several years and during this period cricket administration in the island has been carried out by an interim committee appointed by the Minister of Sports.
