They used very special film-reel projector to project them on to the very large screen, which was in square shape.Later they introdiced "Digital IMAX" & like you said it's a "Projection Format" but they Reduced the Aspect Ratio, Screen Size, Resolution with that change.Now the new "Digital IMAX" is very similar to most of the other ordinary cinemas. that's the issue.If they replaced their old reel-based IMAX projecter with Digital Projector with exactly the same Aspect Ratio, Resolution, Screen Size as the old reel-based IMAX projector, then there is no issue & it could have been the best movie experience in the word.But sadly IMAX Corporation wanted to make the parts (projector, screen, camera) cheap to spread their business around the globe, so they ruined all most all of the good qualities IMAX once had just because they need more and more money.</blockquote>
