A group of 16 Sri Lankan fishermen who had been detained by the Indian authorities for the past eight weeks were released and handed over to the naval authorities yesterday evening.
The group who were taken into custody by the Indian Coast Guard after they had drifted into the territorial waters of that country was handed over to the navy on the high seas of the Palk Strait, officials said.
The group was brought to the Kankasanthurai Port and were later helped to leave for their relevant homes in the south and elsewhere.
