I've been trying to get KDE 4.1 work on debian lenny without sucess . . .this seems to be due to a problem with the repos . . . but trying to find every dependency is like hell . . I'm gonna wait till lenny officially come out.
This is because KDE4.1 is still buggy. I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 and KDE 4.1 and had a miserable time. Sure the KDE 4.1 is nice looking with all the graphics and effects but it still has too much bugs and keeps crashing. I'll be waiting until it becomes somewhat more stable before trying it out.
However both Kmail 1.10.1 and Kopete 0.60.1 (both comes with KDE 4.1) works well and looks much better and I have them running without any problems now in my XFCE4 desktop (After KDE hosed the GUI, I took it out and installed XFCE4).
If memory serves, Lenny still doesnt have KDE 4.1 in the repos right ?

ya it's in the experimental repo . . .today i checked the debian kde site after a long time . . they now have a guide how to get and install kde for debian lenny. earlier i was even confused about which repos to add to my sources list.

I've tried live cds of kde (linux mint) . . .the graphics were impressive . but what attracted me to it was QT4 . . they say now kde is faster than the QT3 based kde 3 series.

I think i jumped in too early . . but i'm just a linux enthusiast so i don't have the worry of maintaining a stable system . . i'm free to experiment.

for some time i was using Zenwalk linux . . it had xfce on default, and ran nicely on every machine i checked . . xfce is good for a low resource pc . . but i feel it's much more stable than gnome and kde which always try to emulate windows and is always in the cutting edge.

KDE4 seems to load faster than KDE3 but its just too unstable. Sometimes the mouse doesnt work or the arrow keys goes off or something else crashes.

Debian Stable is pretty much stable :)
    Even Lenny is stable.

Zenwalk is based on another stable linux. Its based on Slackware. the oldest Linux distro around.
XFCE is based on GTK (like Gnome) but is extremely light weight and its very stable. It doesnt have the plethora of bells and whistles of Gnome/KDE but it gives a full working Desktop.

I've used slackware some time ago . . was impressed about it's barebones approach (no branding whatsoever) Just like linux from scratch :) Didn't keep it for a long time coz my patience ran away. I'm not a linux pro.

XFCE is still my fav desktop environment . . . I'm now far beyond the days i freaked out if the desktop lacks a blue bar with a green button with start imprinted on it. I prefer a system which is fast to work on while retaining the compatibility for the cutting edge. . .
About windows i'm still using xp and have no idea to shift to vista. xp works fine and is superfast on the lastest systems. In Linux i prefer a lightweight desktop, that's what attracted me to zenwalk . . still the zenwalk repo is quite small . . but can be supplemented by slackware pacakges. :)
