Prolific young batsman Tilina Kandamby has re-kindled the memories of Arjuna Ranatunga to the international media.
Senior cricket writer David Hopps is one of them who has seen a strking resemblance. In his article in The Guardian, Hopps thinks Kandamby has provided a solution for Sri Lanka’s brittle middle order.
Hopps wrote ; “Sri Lanka's middle order is regarded as vulnerable but in Thilana Kandamby they might have found the answer. A burly left-hander, stout-hearted against the short ball and possessed of some shrewd innovations, he is bound to awaken comparisons with the old streetfighter, Arjuna Ranatunga. They share the same school, Ananda College, similar build and a comparable batting average.”
“When Kandambi was run out for 53, it was also a very Ranatunga-type end, were it not for the fact that Kandambi actually fancied the single only for it to be refused by Mathews. It also denied Sri Lanka a chance of the kind of total that would trouble England.”
