Sri Lanka's tour to England in 2009 is in doubt because of potential commitment clashes with the lucrative Indian Premier League.

The majority of Sri Lanka's top players are signed up to three-year deals with one of the IPL's eight team franchises.

The six-week tournament will start on 10 April, which is set to clash with the first Test scheduled for 8 May.

Sri Lanka stepped in to take on Zimbabwe's tour after England cut cricket ties with the African country.

Sri Lanka's administrators have yet to ratify the two-Test, three one-day international programme.

A committee meeting is set to take place in Colombo on Thursday, where the tour is expected to be confirmed.

But they face the real threat of a revolt if their leading players choose the IPL over international commitments.

Captain Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan, Dilhara Fernando, Sanath Jayasuriya and Upal Tharanga are among the players to have signed lucrative three-year deals with IPL franchises.

Sri Lanka's tour of England next year hangs in the balance with Mahinda Rajapakse, the country's president, instructing his sports minister to ensure that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) propose alternate dates for the tour or decline the invitation of the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Cricinfo has learnt that Rajapakse issued the instructions to Gamini Lokuge, the sports minister, after senior Sri Lankan players presented him on Wednesday with a copy of a letter they had sent to SLC chairman Arjuna Ranatunga seeking a clarification on the proposed tour from April 21-May 30. Those dates clash with the second season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where 13 Sri Lankans are on contracts with the various franchises.

One possibility SLC may offer the ECB is for the original plan of two Tests and three ODIs to be converted into an ODI series between May 21-30. Sources said that the idea of sending a second-string team to England was also mooted initially but dismissed.

The letter does not mention the possibility of a player boycott, as is being widely speculated, but records the cricketers' disappointment at the timing of the tour and notes that they had been previously promised by SLC that the "IPL window would be clear in 2009 and 2010", the sources said.

The 13 Sri Lankans on three-year contracts with the franchises, including Mahela Jayawardene, their captain, Kumar Sangakkara, the vice-captain, and Muttiah Muralitharan. Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, has already announced that the second season of the lucrative Twenty20 tournament will be held from April 10-May 29, 2009.

A final decision on the situation is expected to be taken after SLC officials meet on Thursday to discuss the issue.

Sri Lanka's England tour slots in the fixture gap caused by the ECB's decision to suspend bilateral ties with Zimbabwe and the cancellation of their 2009 visit.

I think we should ignore England...........Those people are quite swollen headed........And our Sri Lankan board should have spoken to our cricketers as well.....I read in one of the articles that in comparison to other countries Sri Lankan players are the lease played.......The only players getting lesser pay than Sri Lankans are the bangladeshis.........How pathetic ?
IPL is not a headache..........If the game of cricket needs to prevail for the long term.....Tournaments like IPL is a must.......Our Sri Lankan Cricketers have done a lot to the country, especially in bringing in glory..........
I THINK WE SHOULD NOT GIVE IN TO ENGLISH.......IT'S HIGH TIME THAT WE SHOWED THAT WE ARE NOT CHEAP.......

Ofcourse, that's not entirely England's fault as well... because if India tour England they give 5 tests and 7 ODI's if Sri Lanka tours.. lesser than that... 1st thing Indian Cricket board is the richest of them all and its no secret they control the ICC, secondly India, Pakistan matches are more lucrative because of the amount of Indian and Pakistani supporters in those country and all around the world...

So ICC should play their part and give the same amount of matches for other countries as well... and how well India supports that.... I don't know!!!

Personally for me.. IPL is NOT Cricket!!! Its for people who like to see bowler bashing.... and I'm not a fan of 20-20 either... India had IPL, India is the richest cricket board, India has Billion people but still.... they fail to rise to the occasion which is pathetic for me... at least by now they should have won 2 world cup for a country that basically breath cricket!!! Like ENGLAND & soccer!!!

So I dont know how you think IPL would be the savior of Cricket in the future where all it has done is threatening the existing 50-50 system!!
