Iran: UN sanctions 'unlikely to be approved'

Iran dismissed a draft UN resolution to expand sanctions in response to its nuclear programme, saying the measures were unlikely to be approved and would not break its economy if they were implemented.

The draft resolution, agreed by all five permanent Security Council members after months of negotiation, targets Iranian banks and calls for inspection of vessels suspected of carrying cargo related to Iran's nuclear or missile programs.

Brazil, Turkey urge UN not to impose Iran sanctions

Brazil and Turkey have urged the United Nations Security Council not to impose new sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.

Brazil and Turkey, which were behind negotiations that resulted in Iran agreeing this week to export much of its low grade uranium, issued the letter to its fellow members on the 15 seat Security Council.

It comes a day after the United States said it had reached agreement with other countries including China and Russia on a draft resolution to impose new sanctions targetting Iran's banking system, cargo shipping and arms imports.

The resolution is yet to be passed.

Brazil, Turkey urge diplomacy on Iran

Brazil and Turkey have urged the UN Security Council (UNSC) not to impose new sanctions against Iran after a new US-prepared draft resolution was made public.

"Brazil and Turkey are convinced that it is time to give a chance for negotiations and to avoid measures that are detrimental to a peaceful solution of this matter," read a joint letter by the two countries to the 15 members of the UNSC.

The Brazilian foreign ministry said the letter was signed by Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim and his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu, AFP reported.

The letter was issued in reaction to a new US-drafted resolution against Iran that was made public on Wednesday, calling on Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment activities or face further UNSC sanctions.

The draft, if ratified, will ban countries from selling new categories of heavy weaponry to Iran and will enforce restrictions against the country's banking sector.

As two non-permanent members of the UNSC, Brazil and Turkey have been seeking to promote diplomacy over the Iranian nuclear issue.

The UNSC comprises of five permanent -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the US -- and 10 temporary members. For a resolution to pass, it needs at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes by permanent members.

Iran rejects the rationale behind imposing sanctions against the country for its nuclear work, arguing that its nuclear work is being fully monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Iran set to unveil updated battle tank

An updated version of the Zolfaqar battle tank will be unveiled as early as this weekend, Iranian military officials said.

Iranian Army Brig. Gen. Ahmad Reza Pourdastan told the semiofficial Fars News Agency that the military was ready to unveil the updated battle tank during the next Iranian month, which begins Saturday.

"Army's ground force has carried out ample research and studies for upgrading the technology and applications of Zolfaqar tanks, and the updated version of the tank will be unveiled in the (Iranian) month of Khordad (May 22 - June 21)," he said.

Iran wrapped up an 8-day war games exercise in the Strait of Hormuz and the northern Arabian Sea last week. Iranian military forces highlighted a series of weapons, including a range of medium-range missiles and newly equipped fighter jets, during the maneuvers.

Pourdastan said the updated tank is armed with a 125 millimeter smooth-bore canon and can fire a six-pound warhead at a muzzle velocity of 2,800 feet per second.

"Fire navigation system of the new Zolfaqar tank has been updated and Laser systems have been mounted onto the tank," he said. "These upgrades have remarkably increased the tank's operational capabilities."

ltte supporters are in jail (for financing ltte, getting weapons) in US

USA has strong free speech rights under the constitution, ltte supporters are using them

if they break any terrorism or any other laws they will be prosecuted

now you can see ltte supporters are moving towards the political side not just in the USA

China is already a world power

lot of people have been saying 'its over for america' they have proved them wrong

when US got involved in world war 2 they were weak
