    1) To start webcast of sirasa TV you will have to pay them :sorry:
    2) Hard to catch the market now because there are tons of people on youtube uploading teledramas and programs daily
    3) -------------
    4) more than 80% of sri lankans got slower internet connections. HD videos on those is just a dream
    5) Again bandwidth problems comes out. And market is hard to catch up!

**** How do you plan to make profit by offering those services to Sri lankans? If you plan to make profit with ads that will fail for sure because major ad programs like adsense pays lower to clicks from sri lankans and this niche is typically low paying one! So think twice!

    Hi Ruchira,
1st of all thank you for the comments! Seems you know something about SL market:)

    1) I didn't know about that :) anyway I'm willing to Pay them if people want to watch the channel. How about other TV station?
    2) Yep. I agree. but my wife & her friends said. Youtube VDOs are suck and they asked me to do something atleast for them :) family matters :)
    4) I've my own VDO encording system(developed by me) & able to do HD 720p encoding at 384kbps(Video) + 96 kbps(Audio). I've done excessive testing with Sri Lankan people and 70% of ADSL users are able to play those streams without any buffering. I think 480p won't be a problem.
    5) Yes. You are correct. I heard ADLS users got 128kbps uplink.

I want to start these services as Free services and I don't expect any income of these services:) Since I already running a CDN (Content Delivery Network) I don't have to spend $$$ on Network/Infrastructure. but I may hire a few guys from SL for capturing/encording/office works.

Thank you so much for all your comments I really appreciate it.

to broadcast any local TV station, you'll have to get written permission from then as well as pay for it. So dont think this is going to work out unless you do a pirate broadcast and the moment you advertise, all the TV stations will sue you.
Same goes for broadcasting teledramas and other local shows. Technically, it applies for local shows as well as foreign shows so if you broadcast a show like CSI and Fox gets to hear about it, expect law suits from them as well.

Not sure if web based broadcasting requires you to get a broadcasting license. If it does, you got even more costs coming your way.

    Hi kosandpol,
I'll obtain permission & willing to pay royalty fees. My existing CDN supports Geo-blocking & DRM management.
    Thank you!

got money to burn eh ?
Your target market will have to be the SL diaspora as only a handful within SL will want to watch FTA channels on their PCs when they can comfortably watch it on the TV.
SL people living outside of SL will ofcause find it quite useful especially if its free.

Good But Will Fail Idea for the Sri Lanka Market...

    1. There may have 100s of legal restrictions to web cast there transmission.. Almost main TV providers do Webcast and not in HD.
    2. Yep Most of uploads not in best Quality.. Coz they do have a competition between them to upload 1st and fast.. So they try to upload ASAP. with least quality.. ( There is no sense of having HQ Teledrama.. once it watch it will not watch again.. also there are Copyright issues and those episods and channels suspends frequantly..)
    3. -------- No Idea ----------
    4. HD is a good thing. 75% webcast watchers lives out of country and they all seeking best quality. So it doesnt seems sound bad.

    5. This is unuseful at this point. Coz this service will use to stream copyright protect contents and will harm to loose bandwidth and sever resources as well.

End Of the Day good concept to implement in Sri Lanka, Coz No one doesnt have this idea.

No one reach 3rd party webs if there is a proper place to get all there needs.

Go ahead with least requrenments and try to sort out legal standards and protocols. I got the network of 3rd party web site handlers and I know thier frequent problems as well.. :D

I have bad experiance of live streaming and handling same sort of web sites..

Best thing is to start it from a country like us. And focus on giant sporting events.. Such as cricket tours .. Sri Lanka rupavahini did not have proper webcast service, whole south asia will gather with the services. Then it can expand.

    Hi Tikko,
I already have a small CDN. Currentlly I'm handling 6Gbps ~ 10Gbps traffic. Normally I partner with content providers such as TV Stations, Exhibition Organisers & Entertainment companies. I allow them to use my CDN services, They pay me according the amount of bandwidth they used, Number of cuncurrent veiwers, and Event/Streaming duration.

I do have several POPs in North America - US, Central America - Costa Rica, Western Europe - Netherlands, Eastern Europe - Czech Republic, Southeast Asia - Thailand. Technically my system able to handle 30 Gbps, that means now I'm consuming less than 30% and wasting 70% of Bandwidth:( that is why I wanted to start something like Catch Up TV network(coz I've enough bandwidth). as you suggested I should partner with SL content providers/TV stations. That won't be a simple task, atleast I've to give a try.
    Thanks for the hint.

considering the bandwith, your servers are not hosted in SL right ?
if you really plan to target local viewers, suggest you get servers hosted in the country as bandwidth within the local cloud is lot higher than international cloud. So local viewers will get an uninterrupted stream if its within the local cloud. Even HD at low bandwidths might work if its in the local cloud.

Ill give away my money to drug addicts rather purchasing bandwidth from SLT

wow man you got 30Gbps worth of pipes and handling 10Gbps traffic constantly? :nerd::) And you are telling that you own small cdn! 10Gbps of constant traffic is small for you? :baffled:

How about the market on CDNs these days? Do you able to catchup the market with big players like Akamai,Limelight and Amazon? I got a email from amazon few hours ago informing that now they do flash streaming

    Dear Amazon Web Services Customer,

We're excited to announce the launch of live HTTP streaming for Amazon CloudFront, AWS's easy-to-use content delivery network.
Using Amazon CloudFront with Amazon EC2 running Adobe's Flash Media Server and Amazon Route 53 (AWS's DNS service), you can now easily and cost-effectively deliver your live video via AWS. And, we've made it simple to get started by creating an AWS CloudFormation template that handles all of the provisioning and sequencing for all the AWS resources you need for this live streaming stack.

Guess you will get more competition then :)

Whats your CDN company name and URL? if you cant tell in public please PM me :)

catchup TV is same like Video on Demand bro! Its same thing that peotv offers, you know that thing right?

In simple terms its all about watching missed programs on TV channels, online or in other way!
