    Sri Lanka main opposition seeks international investigations team over today's suicide blast
    Monday, October 6, 2008, 17:03 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

    Oct 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka main opposition, United National Party seeks the support of a international team to investigate into today's suicide explosion in Anuradhapura that killed key party members and supporters.

    According to UNP Member of Parliament, Tissa Attanayake, demised North Central Province Opposition Leader, Major General Janaka Perera was warned several instances of the great thereat he has from the Tamil terrorist organization, LTTE.

    “National Intelligence Bureau and many other state organizations have informed Maj. General Janaka Perera of the threat he has due to his former career decisions taken to eradicate terrorism from Sri Lanka. But, knowing the threat he has, necessary protection was not provided. Maj. General Janaka Perera had to resort to Supreme Court in getting protection which was proven not enough,” he said.

    According to UNP web site, UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekera said "While the Govt. is providing arms and security to Pillayan, Mangalam Master and Karuna, the LTTE cadres, it refused to give security to the War hero Janaka Perera who fought for the country to save against the very cadres whom the government is now protecting and pampering. It has even given a bullet proof vehicle to Pillayan, but did not give basic security to the Army Commander who saved the country from the terrorists. This time too the Govt. is trying to sham the investigations by blaming on the LTTE even before investigations have begun."

    Tigers take Janaka in Rajiv style killing

    by Norman Palihawadana

    * Dr. Johnpulle, wife among 27 others killed
    * A repeat of the Rajiv Gandhi killing
    * The Maj. Gen. was
    * smiling with his assassin
    * Killer showed wired body before blast
    * TV journalist also killed

    An LTTE suicide bomber yesterday blew himself up killing North Central Province Opposition leader Major General Janaka Perera (retd.), his wife and 27 others at the opening ceremony of the new UNP office in Anuradhapura, police said.

    Yesterday’s suicide blast was similar to the attack on the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, where a women suicide bomber bent down and touched his feet while at the same time detonating the bomb strapped to her seventeen years ago.

    Eyewitnesses said a cheerful Maj. Gen. Janaka Perera had just opened a new UNP branch office in the Anuradhapura town at the auspicious time of 8.15 a.m., when the attacked occurred.

    While he was talking to party officials of the district, a man in a green shirt and black shorts had gone near him and bent down with both hands joined together in salutation and blown himself up.

    Among the dead were Dr. Raja Johnpulle the UNP Anurahdapura District organiser, his wife, a TV journalist and four attorneys at law, who were also leading party activists of the district.

    Of about 80 injured people admitted to the Anuradhapura Hospital, 15 were in a critical condition, hospital sources said.

    Sources said a large number of party activists had gone there to wish him yesterday morning. He had also smiled with the assassin masquerading as a party supporter.

    The suicide bomber is said to have been mingling with the UNP members and supporters for sometime without arousing anyone’s suspicion. Dr. Johnpulle and his wife were holding hands at the time of the explosion and even in death they were together, eyewitnesses said.

    A senior police source said Janaka Perera had not requested police security at the opening of the new UNP branch office opposite the old bus stand in Anuradhapura.

    A special police investigation team, accompanied by the Government Analysts Department officials was flown to Anuradhapura immediately after the news reached police headquarters, police said.

    The journalist killed in the blast was attached to the news division of a Television station.

    He had accompanied a camera crew to the North and was returning when he had decided to cover the opening ceremony of the new UNP party branch office at Anuradhapura for his TV station, sources said.

    Vajira: One of the first six to join Army Women’s Corps
    COLOMBO: Major General Janaka Perera’s wife Vajira, 48, a victim of the suicide bomb attack in Anuradhapura yesterday, was an old girl of Vishaka Vidyalaya, Colombo.

    She was one of the first six women officers to join the Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps at the inception of the new unit. She was trained at the Women’s Royal Army Corps College in UK in 1980 and served in the Sri Lanka Army for a brief period.

    She resigned from the Army in 1982 to get married to Major General Perera who held the appointment of Military Liaison Officer at the Defence Ministry at that time.

    Vajira who was a housewife after marriage, rendered a great service to the military community as a military wife until Major General Perera’s retirement.

    She accompanied her husband to Australia and Indonesia on him being appointed the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Australia and Indonesia. On completion of the diplomatic posts they returned to Sri Lanka. She was born on September 30.

    People who say Janaka was not given enough security maybe right! This happens when you are in opposing party.. so agreed to that!

    But if they say this happened because the security was reduced.... it is a bit of exaggeration because the same people never said that when Jayaraj got killed!

    Lets look at the possibilities from the perspective that MR did this... (please list down more if anyone is interested)

    1. MR have connections with LTTE, and he arranged to kill Janaka through LTTE which is basically the same group he is having a large offensive operation in the north.. so this is all DRAMA by MR... and he is connected to LTTE too!!!

    2. MR arranged this internally, and if he did that way.. this contract surely went to some thugs.... and it would be the first time a Sri Lankan thug went on a suicide mission to blew himself up to kill an Army officer... (if anyone ever heard similar situation please mention)

    Anymore?

    this is regarding your 1st point...... u have mistaken LTTE vth Pilleyan. nobody can say MR (or the government) dsnt hav any conections vth Pilleyan....

    and the second one... some eye witness say the suicide bomber was a differetnly able teenager n a guy who was living in the vicinity of Anuradhapura town from a long time.... so is it impossible to get hold of a person like that to do this... vth or vithout his knowladge..... now u will say even the LTTE wud hav got hold of him...but y shud they do so when they have specielist suicide cardres....

    :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:

    3.Government backed paramilitary groups like Karuna group, Pillain group, EPDP, PLOTE(In 2006 one of Karuna's men carried out a suicide bomb attack against LTTE.)
