Mahela Jayawardene is likely to be asked to take over as Sri Lanka captain from Tillakaratne Dilshan following the South Africa series. When asked at a press conference whether he would accept the offer to lead the team again, Jayawardene said, "I will have to think about it. I will need some time."
Sri Lanka's Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage has, however, denied reports that the sports ministry was planning to replace the current selection committee, coach and captain of the Sri Lankan team. "No decision has been taken so far to replace or to change the Selection Committee and the Management of Sri Lanka Cricket or the Captaincy of the Sri Lankan Cricket Team," Aluthgamage said in a statement issued by the ministry.
The minister's denial came in the wake of a story in the Daily Mirror that claimed the selectors, Dilshan and coach Geoff Marsh were on the verge of being replaced following Sri Lanka's loss in the third ODI against South Africa, a defeat that cost them the series.
The minister did, however, point out that it was the "responsibility of the Sri Lankan government and the Sports Ministry" to take "stern and appropriate action" to ensure that Sri Lankan side becomes "the number one team in the world." The ministry, he said, would not hesitate to take decisions that would improve the team's fortunes for the future. Upali Dharmadasa, the president of Sri Lanka Cricket, has already been asked to submit a report to the ministry on the team's recent string of poor performances.
Sri Lanka have struggled since the retirement of Muttiah Muralitharan in July 2010, winning just one Test over the last 18 months, though that one was an historic first-ever victory on South African soil last month. They did finish runner's up in the 2011 World Cup final in April 2011, but since then have lost one-day series against England, Australia, Pakistan and now South Africa.
