An Army Corporal who had allegedly assaulted and wounded Matara District Judge K.D.L. Saman Kumara in front of the 3rd Gemunu Watch Army Camp in Matara yesterday was taken into custody by Matara police.

The incident had taken place when the District Judge was retuning to his official residence from the court house with his wife in his official vehicle.

Matara hospital sources said that the wounded judge had come to the Matara hospital and gone home after undergoing an examination by the judicial medical officer.

According to police, the suspect corporal had stopped his motorbike with his wife in it and was answering a call on his mobile phone when the judge had sounded the horn requesting the soldier to move aside.

The assault had taken place over an argument that followed. Police said that they had information that several other soldiers had also been involved in the assault.

There had been minor damages caused to the judge’s official vehicle in the incident. The wife of the suspect soldier had been admitted to the Matara hospital alleging that the judge assaulted her.

However, security of the Matara court had been tightened following the incident.

When inquired about the incident from the commanding officer of the 3rd Gemunu Watch in Matara Bharatha Kodituwakku said that police investigations are going on regarding the “unexpected and minor incident” that had taken place.

He further said that if anyone in his camp was proven to be involved in it action would be taken against them.
