you got it dead wrong mate............ did you know that every thing you buy or every service you are provided with, that you are paying some of its' amount to the government?

remember dude, all those corporated world you have spoken of are sustained because of the normal masses ...........................

Yes correct, but still the cost of living in SL is much lower compareed to other countries isnt it? Now isnt this because of the fact that there is less taxes charged in by the government? The general purpose taxes charged are the VAT, the others are specific taxes such as NDB or EFL etc.

But usually in any economy, the major revenue for the Government is via Income Taxes. Is that something that is taken up properly in this country?

Ow innawa, there is a massive income distribution gap, I agree!

The government is elected by the public all-right. But its far more than enough I should say, that what has been given as free education.

I'll give you another example. Look at India, there is a far more wider gap than SL has. But does the Governmnt give 100% free education upto HE like in SL?? NOO!

India does not look into the poor people's welfare. They are supposed to rise on their own, and sure enough, the ones who can do, but the weak ones fall off. (doesnt that lead to something like natural selection in the long run? Which strengthens the economy). And if you are talking about the Pubic Choice Theory, mann... the population of a such poor state in India itself is enough to turn down the Government.

Who said that the Government is not spendin the money? Who is running the very universities that we are talking about here? You or your vote?

The Government has many other aims, it has to provide and maintain the infrastructure, the health sector, the transport, its countless....

Plus, each year the government budget is in a HEAVY defecit. (I mean, a massive defecit)

And they ask for more, FREE

yes,cost of living is lower. then again you should think of the income of an average person............ if you compare the cost of living in london with sri lanka, then you should also compare the average income of two citizens in london and sri lanka..............

in that aspect the cost of living for that average person who lives in sri lanka is much more compared to that average londoner..........

yes it's a majour way of revenue. it is up to people to pay their relavent income taxes. on the other hand you cannot expect an income tax from more than 60% of the population, cuz what they earn is hardy enough with the growing and prisy necessaties...........
