Laugfs Gas sells a 12.5 kg domestic gas cylinder at Rs. 1,679 sold to them by Ceylon Petroleum Corporation for only Rs. 468, says Asanka Mahagedaragama of 'Development Watch'.
He said that Laugfs Gas earns a profit of over Rs. 1,000 from a gas cylinder.
He questioned whether the government, which claims that reducing gas prices would affect funds needed for war, is using the profits acquired by Laugfs Gas for the war.
Mr. Mahagedaragama was commenting to 'Lanka Dissent' on the prices of essential commodities and taxes.
He said, "Though the local gas prices should be decreased by 50% to 60% in accordance with the world market prices, our sources reveal that prices are to be slashed by a slight percentage under a secret agreement between several ministers and the suppliers."
"Despite the sharp fall of gas prices in the world market during the past four months, local prices remain very high," Mr. Mahagedaragama said.
'We also received reports that a certain minister directly connected to the gas prices have gone on a tour to Thailand with a gas supplier on the same night the revision took place,' he added.
The business sector is of the view that price reductions are rare due to such connections and that these high profits acquired are divided among a certain powerful lot, he further said.
