United People`s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) said that it will not obstruct the President Maithripala Sirisena`s proposed 100-day plan for the new government and assured to support the steps the party approves.
Addressing the first media briefing after the elections, the Badulla District Parliamentarian Nimal Siripala de Silva said the UPFA will provide its fullest support to points that can be agreed upon in the new President`s plan for good governance.
`The people voted for Maithripala Sirisena based on his 100-day programme. The people have agreed to it. We are not prepared to cause obstructions to it. We will see as to what points we can agree on and we will provide our fullest support to it,` MP Nimal Siripala de Silva said.
Mr. de Silva said they would accept the new Prime Minister even though there were some constitutional issues in appointing him.
`A new Prime Minister was sworn in. There may be constitutional issues with regard to the appointment of the Prime Minister, however he has been sworn in. We assume that they will appoint their own cabinet of ministers,` he said.
He said all the ministerial portfolios are considered to be void after the new Prime Minister was sworn in Friday.
`We are not going to raise any technical issues,` he added.
Addressing the same press briefing, the UPFA Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena said that the people of the country expect President Sirisena to implement his 100-day programme and as the legislative group with a majority in Parliament they will support the endeavor.
President`s 100-day plan says at the end of 100 days period a Parliamentary system will be put in place instead of the Executive Presidential system and a National Government of all parties represented in Parliament will be established to govern for a period of at least two years.
