Lipoplasty is a surgery that permanently removes fat from a patient’s body. It is typically performed under local anesthetic, and it usually takes between one and several hours to complete. During the surgery, a doctor makes one or several incisions into a target area which the patient and doctor have agreed on previously.
The doctor then inserts a special hollow needle called a cannula into the incision. The cannula is attached to a vacuum device, and as the doctor moves it back and forth, it breaks up and suctions out the unwanted fat.
