Ukraine entered a 17-day nationwide lockdown from Friday to curb the spread of COVID-19, foreign media reported.

The lockdown measures include the closure of restaurants, stores that don’t sell groceries, cinemas, gyms and fitness centres.

The measures will last through January 24 and are set to curb the possible increase of new infections after mass gatherings on New Year’s Eve and Christmas Eve.

As of Friday, over 1 million people in Ukraine have tested positive for COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic; about 7,000 new cases are reported daily.

The government’s decision to enact restrictions fell in line with a global trend to impose strict lockdowns in January.

The quarantine measures are currently the only option for Ukraine to try to curb the spread of the coronavirus, as a mass vaccination campaign is still a distant dream for the country.

Ukraine closed schools, restaurants and gyms on Friday as a new nationwide lockdown took effect to fight the coronavirus pandemic in the nation of 41 million people.

Coronavirus infections in Ukraine began rising again in September and have remained relatively high. The country has registered more than 1 million coronavirus cases with 19,588 deaths as of Jan. 8.

The government had decided on the January lockdown in early December, when Ukraine was at the peak of the epidemic and the number of new cases stood at around 12,000-14,000 a day.

The new measures, which include the closure of entertainment centres and a ban on mass gatherings, will be in force until Jan. 24.
