Closer than u think, I am
Machan, Most of the time windows fills the disk with "System Restore" garbage. There is a folder system volume information in every partition. If you can't see it goto windows explorer and Tools>Folder Options, View tab Select "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files(Recommended)" Don't worry, it is safe. With it you can keep track of system files.

Now, delete everything in system volume information folder. Windows won't allow you to delete some files, so avoid them. These are backups of deleted non-windows files. So they can be used in System Restore. But in WinXP, it's rubbish. It makes problems worse. Just use the the standard procedure for a restore. Bad Software? Uninstall and Clean Registry, Bad Drivers? Reinstall Etc.
So what's the need of rubbish backup data? Delete them.

P.S. If you have a NTFS partition, you might need a third party tool. Try googleing

    Hope this helps
