analysts here say a new death squad the so-called People's Revolutionary Red Army is responsible for many of the latest killings in the south and central areas of the island. The targets,.. are almost exclusively members of the JVP...Police and army officers .. deny any connection with, or knowledge of, the Red Army. But independent observers are convinced the new death squads must be linked in some way to the security forces. They say that the Red Army's activities have been marked by unusual professionalism and discipline, and that although most of the killings have taken place during curfew hours, no suspect has been arrested. Some believe the Red Army has been organized by the Government to hit back at its political opponents and are linking it with the police commando unit known as the Special Task Force. This elite group was trained by British mercenaries in the early 1980s ..The unit's officers deny any link, saying it is on special duty in Colombo
