By Ruwan Weerakoon in Colombo

Colombo, 22 October, (Asiantribune.com): Tiger sources revealed that two of their aircrafts were involved in the bombing of the Anuradhapura air force base and one of their flight has returned to their base safely and another one missing.

According to Tiger sources, one of their flight was attacked while returning after bombing the air force base and it has not returned to the base located somewhere in the Vanni.

In the meantime, Air Force and Police in Anuradhapura told that they have received a report that a flight has crashed and fallen some where in Mihintale nearly 13 kilometers away from the air force base in Anuradhapura.

Subsequently it was confirmed that a Bell 212 helicopter that went from the Air force base in search of the LTTE flights crashed due to engine failure near Mihintale and two gunners and two pilots died.

Air force spokesperson confirmed that two MI 24 helicopter gunships have been damaged in the explosion.

Reports also revealed that three Air force personnel were injured in the battle with the tigers and are hospitalized.

The fighting lasted about two hours and the air force and military have jointly sent teams into the surrounding area to search for the attackers, and for the LTTE plane.

Rebels attack air base in Sri Lanka

TAMIL Tiger rebels attacked an air force base in northern Sri Lanka before dawn today and heavy explosions and gunfire could be heard, the Defence Ministry said.

The attack in the north-central district of Anuradhapura comes amid near daily land, sea and air clashes as a new chapter in a two decade civil war rages on.

"According to the available information, heavy explosions and firing of weapons are still going on," the Defence Ministry said on its website. There were no details of any casualties or damage, and the Tigers were not immediately available for comment.

Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said a small group of rebels was attacking the base, but he had no further details.

"There is an attack in the base. There is a small group of LTTE fighters there," he said, referring to the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

    "It is definitely the LTTE."

Military sources said army and air force bases in the north had been warned to be on alert for a possible attack by the Tigers' air wing of light aircraft, which bombed oil installations and an air base adjacent to the island's only international airport earlier this year.

The attack in the north, where the renewed civil war is now focused after troops drove the Tigers from bastions in the east of the island, comes after the military said dozens of Tigers were killed in heavy clashes in the north last week.

An estimated 5000 people have been killed since early last year amid near daily land and sea clashes, ambushes and air strikes, taking the death toll since the conflict erupted in 1983 to around 70,000.

The Tigers seek to carve out an independent state in the north and east. The Government rules that out and has instead vowed to evict the rebels from all territory they control.

While the Government has had the upper hand in recent months, analysts say there is no clear winner on the horizon and fear the conflict could rumble on for years.

Counter-terrorism experts say there is no military solution to Sri Lanka's protracted conflict, and that the only hope is for both sides to reach a long-elusive political settlement.

    [TamilNet, Sunday, 21 October 2007, 23:47 GMT]
Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) launched an air and ground attack on Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) air base in Anuradhapura in the early hours of Monday, Liberation Tigers Military Spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan told TamilNet. COLOMBO, Oct 22 - The Tamil Tigers' nascent air wing dropped two bombs on an air force base in north Sri Lanka before dawn on Monday, the military said, but there were no immediate details of any casualties from the land and air attack.

The rebel air strike in the north-central district of Anuradhapura comes months after the Tigers' first ever air attacks using light aircraft smuggled into the country in pieces, and amid near daily land, air and sea clashes as renewed civil war grinds on.

"An LTTE aircraft has come and dropped two bombs on the base," said military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara. "We have no details of any casualties."

He said a small group of Tiger fighters had also attacked the base from the ground.

An air force spokesman said two MI-24 helicopters parked at the base were damaged in the attack, while another helicopter in the air was forced to make a crash landing. There were no details on the condition of the crew.

A search operation was underway around the air force base, one of Sri Lanka's largest.

A better approach would be to encourage the people in the country to pay their taxes accordingly, so that the GOSL will have enough money to buy arms to wipe off the bastards from the surface...
