Police say Tamil protesters have entered the Sri Lankan Embassy in Oslo, smashing windows and destroying office equipment.
No casualties were immediately reported.

Police spokesman Tor Groettum says about 100 demonstrators joined Sunday's protest of the treatment of Sri Lanka's treatment of its ethnic minority Tamils during a military offensive against Tamil Tiger rebels.
Groettum says the demonstrators went on a rampage before police intervened. He says police couldn't immediately identify who had been responsible for the damage.

No arrests were made.

On Sunday, Sri Lanka's leader ordered a two-day suspension of the offensive against the rebels to enable tens of thousands of trapped civilians to leave the war zone in the north.

A group of Tamil protesters stormed the Sri Lankan embassy in Oslo Sunday, police said, on the fifth day of demonstrations in the Norwegian capital calling for the end of fighting in Sri Lanka.

Even Joerstad, an Oslo police superintendent, told AFP that around 100 Tamil demonstrators tried to storm the Sri Lankan embassy at 1400 (1300 GMT) and that an unknown number managed to break in.

"There were about 100 outside but we don't know how many went inside the embassy," Joerstad said.

"They were inside for about four or five minutes and then they went out," he said, adding that the protesters broke windows and furniture inside the building.

Joerstad said the Tamils left the building at the police's request and that no arrests were made, describing the current situation as "peaceful."
He declined to reveal how many police officers were at the scene at the time.

Godfrey Manoharan, a spokesman for the Tamil protesters, said between 400 and 500 people attended the rally, although Oslo police were unable to confirm those figures.

Manoharan said the protesters had become "angry and frustrated" after reports emerged on a pro-Tamil website that the Sri Lankan military had fired at a civilian "no-fire zone" early Sunday morning.

"It's a message to the Sinhalese government that we won't give up," he said.

Staff at the Sri Lankan embassy in Oslo declined to comment on the incident when contacted by AFP.

Several hundred Tamils have been protesting in Oslo since April 7 calling on Norway to broker a truce between the government and the rebels. Norwegian mediation helped bring about a now-defunct ceasefire between the Sri Lankan government and the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels in February 2002.

Protesters break into Sri Lankan embassy in Oslo

Pro-Tamil Tiger demonstrators broke into the Sri Lankan embassy during a protest in the Norwegian capital Oslo on Sunday, smashing windows and furniture, said police, but no one was hurt.

The protest, the first of several by Tamil Tiger supporters around the world in recent weeks to turn violent, followed a march by around 100,000 people in London on Saturday to demand a ceasefire between Sri Lankan forces and the rebels. "They damaged windows and broke some things inside and then disappeared -- we have not caught anyone," police officer Tor Groettum told Reuters.

Tamils began demonstrating in Oslo last week to pressure Norway, one of four nations heading Sri Lanka's peace process, to use its influence to stop the violence in the country.

"We condemn this attack in no uncertain terms," Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona told Reuters, adding Colombo expected Norwegian authorities to find and prosecute the culprits. Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday ordered the military not to attack the Tamil Tigers during a two-day holiday to let thousands of civilians escape a no-fire zone where they are being held by the separatists.

Soldiers have encircled remnants of the Tamil Tigers in a 17 square km (6 sq mile) no-fire zone on Sri Lanka's northeast coast, and are close to crushing them and ending Asia's longest-running civil war.

Sri Lanka says Norway failed to protect Oslo embassy

Sri Lanka on Sunday lodged a strong protest with Norway over the attack on its embassy in Oslo, and said the authorities had failed in their obligation to protect the diplomatic compound
AFP informs.

Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona said he protested to Norway's ambassador in Colombo, Tore Hattrem, following Sunday's attack against the Sri Lankan embassy by protesters calling for a halt to military hostilities on the island.
"The fact that the attackers went up to the fifth floor of the building and caused extensive damaged shows that the Norwegian authorities have failed to provide the protection they should have," Kohona told AFP.
