RARE BLOOD MOON TO BE VISIBLE TONIGHT

Sri Lankans are set to witness a rare total lunar eclipse and "blood moon" this evening (7).
The celestial event begins at 9:57 PM and will continue until 1:26 AM tomorrow (8), with the peak, or maximum eclipse, expected at 11:42 PM, according to Professor Chandana Jayaratne, Director of the Department of Astronomy and Space Science at the University of Colombo.
The eclipse occurs as the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface.
Professor Jayaratne noted that the next total lunar eclipse visible in Sri Lanka will not occur until December 31, 2028.
