Our photographer Dharmasena Welivita captured this scene at a State-sponsored ceremony at the BMICH where Labour Minister Mervyn Silva threw away the Sirasa microphone last Sunday. Silva, who had been involved in a running battle with the Maharaja Television Network, said that he wouldn’t allow Sirasa to cover the event organised to honour journalists who had supported the war effort. Among the invitees in the front row were Ministers, Dinesh Gunawardene, Keheliya Rambukwella, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena and Lakshman Hulugalle, Director General of the Media Centre for National Security. The organisers and the offender’s ministerial colleagues looked the other way.
