VENICE -- "Machan," a Sri-Lanka-set caper marking the directorial debut of "The Full Monty" producer Uberto Pasolini, has won the Europa Cinemas Label prize as best pic in the Venice fest's Venice Days section. Pasolini's pic, about an ingenious group of slum dwelling Sri Lankans who pretend to be the national handball team in order to get a visa to enter Germany, will now receive support by the Europa Cinemas exhibitors.
The long-gestating "Machan," an early Lido fave, is an Urania Studio of Italy production, co-produced with Babelsberg Film, in association with Shakthi Film. Prasanna Vithanage is the producer.
