Malinga ruled out of New Zealand game

Lasith Malinga, the World Cup's equal leading wicket-taker, has been ruled out of Sri Lanka's match against New Zealand on Thursday with a grade two tear in his left ankle. With the recovery period set between seven and 14 days, Malinga will almost certainly miss the Australia game on April 16 and perhaps even the Ireland clash on April 18, both in Grenada.

Malinga did not train on Tuesday after hurting himself while running at an earlier practice session. Sri Lanka, who first believed the problem was 'nothing serious', could bring in Farveez Maharoof or Nuwan Kulasekara now. But the loss of Malinga, who has 15 victims at 14.26 in the tournament and took a record four wickets in four balls against South Africa, is a serious one against the top-of-the-table New Zealand. Muttiah Muralitharan, meanwhile, has recovered from his groin strain.

"We've got experienced players who can come in and we are confident they can do a job for us," Mahela Jayawardene told AFP. "It depends on how much of a gamble we want to take at this stage."

Jayawardene said an unbeaten New Zealand had not been truly tested in the Caribbean and Sri Lanka were in a good position to challenge them, having drawn 2-2 in their ODI series in New Zealand in December and January. "They are playing some really good cricket but they haven't played one of the top teams yet," he said.

"They've got a very good all-round side and bat until deep. We've played them a lot in the last 12 months and we know their strengths and weaknesses."

We should not risk him by playing 75% fit.. If we can Win NZ game thats it.. We are into Semis securing 2nd r 3rd spot without any problem because we have Ireland match left..

Ya I think so.. If we win only the Ireland match that means we have 8 points.. England have 3 more games with SA,BAN,WI if they win all 3 games they will also get to 8 points.(Which I dont think will happen  ) If in nycase thats the situation then ENG and SL have same points which means NRR will decide the Semi Finalist.. Our NRR is far better than of ENGs currently.
    (SL +1.549 ENG -0.062)

If we don't loose with big margins in the remaining games (I hope we will win them :) )we should be able to maintain a better NRR than of ENGs.. So we have the better chance of goin through.. ;)

Dont forget Bangladeshis as well.. Currently they have 2 points and have 3 matches to play.. but their NRR is even worse than of ENG..

Its a must win game for both these teams in their remaining 3 games. Today's match (ENG v BAN) will decide who will stay and who will go out....

So the bottom line is if England loose any of the remaining 3 matches we will go through to the semis assuming that we win the Ireland game.

its good that slinger is not playing against NZ and Ausis cause if he does then it would make it easier for them to pick malinga's action in semies and in final(if we get in to final). looking at where srilanka is now we have a good chance to be selected to semies even if we lost to AU and NZ. cause we have so cool ireland left to beat. the only thing i am worrying about is malinga's world cup record which is "most wicket taker". Hope he can catch up with mcghrath again after the 2 games.
