Dec 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe hopes to be the Executive Prime Minister in the event of General Sarath Fonseka's election to the top post in the country.
"I have functioned before as Executive Prime Minister in an Executive Cabinet and I hope to do so again," the opposition leader has told the weekly newspaper Sunday Leader in an interview.
Responding to a query by the weekly, Wickremasinghe has said he stands to gain on three issues from the election of General Fonseka.
"The first would be to establish democracy. Second, to install a parliamentary system of government, which will have a majority of UNP MPs. Third, I hope to function as Executive Prime Minister," opposition leader was quoted.
When questioned why the opposition party has not fielded its own candidate Wickremasinghe has told the Sunday Leader that they are supporting the General to abolish the Executive Presidency once he became the Executive President.
"We have not fielded someone outside the UNP. We are merely supporting General Sarath Fonseka, in order to abolish the Executive Presidency, as the JVP are doing, despite a whole lot of ideological differences with the UNP," Wickremasinghe has reportedly said.
