An arithmetic progression is a, a+d, a+2d, ....etc The addition of first two terms a+a+d =11 That's 2a+d =11 and the third term a+2d=1 Using these two equations solve for a and d

It's two simultaneous equations with two unknowns! 2a + d =11 a + 2d =1 Multiply both sides of the second one by a factor of 2 2a + 4d = 2 Now subtract this and the first 3d = 2 -11 = -9 so d = -3 the common difference Therefore 2a = 11 -d = 11 +3 = 14 so a = 7
