Russian Strategic Military has a very mobile part, thanks to the massive truck chassis, developed by the Minsk Tractor Trailer Factory. MAZ-543 evolved as a specialist carrier vehicle which was used to carry numerous missile and rocket systems such as the SS-1 Scud series, the SS-12 Scaleboard and the SSC-3 coastal defense missile.

The family of Smerch (Tornado) Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) is one of the later acquisitions in the Soviet Army. Entering service in 1987, the Smerch carries twelve 9K-58 300-mm rockets that can range to 70 kilometers. The Russian volley-fire rocket system known as Smerch (Tornado) has no analogues in the world. The Smerch machine is usually made of six launchers and six transloaders (each transloader contains 12 rockets and has a crane to move them to the launcher). The unit is capable of delivering mines for the anti-tank and antipersonnel mining of a territory, destroying armored vehicles, fortified constructions and command posts.
