Maya: Secrets of the Pros

2nt2xi.jpg

Maya: Secrets of the Pros
Paperback: 384 pages | Publisher: Sybex (July 22, 2002) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 0782140556 | ISBN-13: 978-0782140552 | Size: 63 Mb Mb
Maya: Secrets of the Pros is an all-new, full-color Maya book, from the authors of our best-selling Mastering Maya 3 and a team of top-tier Maya veterans–pros who’ve worked on everything from “Star Wars: Episode One” to “Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.” Using detailed case-studies, the authors reveal high-level secrets they’ve learned through their real-world Maya experience.

Topics covered include: Modeling, motion capture, lip synching, crowd scenes, surfacing, and rendering. The CD features movie files of sample animations, scene and support files from the projects in the book, and Maya plug-ins.

Chapter 1 - Maya Cloth - The tutorials include a skirt, a curtain, and accessories (using cloth for animating jewelry and bracelets). Unfortunately, there are no fully clothed figures (no shirts, no pants, etc) so everything is very basic, but explained clearly.

Chapter 2 - Non-Photorealistic Rendering - First example has textures sketched in pen, scanned, and then mapped onto animated models. It creates a unique “hand-drawn” effect, and with some interesting rendering styles. Second example is how to create an impressionistic rendering style. Emit particles from object, make those particles strokes, and play with the render settings. I haven’t seen a tutorial like this one before, and it does a lot for making very basic shaded object into a more intriguing render.

Chapter 3: Realistic Camera Movement - The basics of CG cinematography (if you want more on this, I recommend Digital Cinematography & Directing by Dan Ablan). Also goes briefly into camera lenses and focal lengths. The good parts are the long tutorials on Creating Camera Shake and Creating a Handheld Camera. At the end there is a brief tutorial on capturing motion with Maya Live.

Chapter 4: Radiosity, HDRI, LDRI - This is the best and most thorough tutorial on this subject that I’ve found in a Maya format. Rendering tutorials on a spaceship, a robot, and a katana sword. The chapter ends with a brief tutorial on how to render a detailed, complex scene.

Chapter 5: The Character Pipeline - The information is here is so basic, I think the only reason it would be included in an “of the pros” books is that it has a few MEL scripts. Naming conventions, character sets, and some rigging scripts by the author. Certainly one of the least interesting chapters.

Chapter 6: Hair Systems - This very unique chapter that talks about using Maya Hair for alternative purposes. Octopus tentacles, Rope/wire, Character’s secondary motion, and shark animation. Great tutorials for all these examples, which can obviously be applied to nearly anything.

Chapter 7: Dynamics - This is all very basic stuff, with very basic examples (ie a torus lands on a plane, boxes interacting with eachother). Has a couple pages on using Maya Hair and dynamics to make car suspension.

Chapter 8: The Art of Maya Noises - Basic dynamics tutorials. I have no idea why this was in the book. You WILL find better online tutorials because most of the examples are clones of things you will find elsewhere. 1) A water fountain, 2) spinning particles to create a “vortex”, 3) a “hermite electric arc” (two spheres with electricity flowing between them). MEL scripts are included for these examples.

Chapter 9: Polygon/Subdivision modeling a character head (cover of book) - Starts out talking about edgeloops — which has an interesting twist because the character has a “third eye”. Draws curves in the front and side viewports using the EP curve tool, thus creating a skeletal/basic cage that will be used as outlines for poly faces (so, it’s like NURBS modeling, but poly). Has a few pages about filling in the curves-wireframe, pointing out problem areas (triangles, five sided polys, and “stars”) and how to fix them. The tutorial stops at completing the trapezius and neck muscles. No texturing/lighting/rendering discussion is included.

Modeling BMW Maya Tutorial from Simplymaya

Modeling-BMW-Maya-Tutorial-from-Simplymaya.jpg

Simplymaya Modeling BMW Maya Tutorials | 1.5 Gb

This tutorial is meant for intermediate to advanced users who have an understanding of the Maya interface and tools. We will start off the car by setting up image planes of top, side, front and back views to aid us in seeing the correct shape of the car from all angles. Once the image planes are up we will start modeling using a variety of different modeling methods including nurbs curves, nurbs primatives as well as polygons to achieve the basic shape of the car.

Then we’ll combine and edit the geometry to refine our shape and start adding details where lights are found for the contours of the body. Some of the tools we will be using are split polygon, cut face tools. as well as extrude face and edge tools. When the modeling of the car is complete we will begin setting it up for texturing. We’ll cover the UV editor and how to lay flat UV’s of your geometry using the tool set found in the editor. We will then take a snapshot of the UV’s and import them into a paint program where you will learn how to add color using layers as well as the basic techniques of adding stripes of color to your car if you wanted to do so in the future.

Once we have color on our car we will dive into lights and material editing so that we can start getting a nice realistic look and feel. You will learn how to adjust settings on your paint color material to get different effects as well as how to adjust your lights in many different ways to enhance your color by adding highlights and reflections. The last part covers how to do your final renders.

Maya Frog 3D Modeling Tutorial With A Spline Cage

28vpnp4.jpg

Content Inside:

Content Inside:

This tutorial will demonstrate how to use a spline cage to help model an organic creature out of polygons and/or subdivision surfaces in MAYA. A spline cage is a representation of a 3d surface made out of splines, or curves. Modeling with a spline cage is useful for several reasons: It makes modeling quicker and easier by giving you a template to form the pollies around, It helps make a more accurate model by serving as an intermediate step between 2d drawing and 3d modeling, It forces good topology because the NURBS circles used to make the spline cage follow the flow of good poly edge loops, It makes revisions of the model easier because NURBS curves have far fewer points that even the lightest poly meshes. The next step is to trace the features of the orthographic drawings using NURBS curves. Create NURBS curves by navigating create?>cv curve tool. Your best bet at this stage is to start with a very rough level of detail (silhouette and major features first). That way you can make adjustments to the rough shapes in 3d without having to go back and redo stuff. Once the elements are traced, position them in 3d by moving the CVs in place. You can very quickly start to see that the 3d model is going to look like, which is pretty sweet. At this point, you should tweak the curves to make them look good in 3d. Track around your model and make sure the silhouette reads well and the proportions look good. Feel free to get away from the way the orthos were shaped to make it look good. From this point on, the orthos will pretty much only
be used for reference.

Mech Warrior – Tutorial description:
This tutorial is geared for intermediate Maya users. If you’re into mechanical robots then this tutorial will be a lot of fun. We will begin by using image planes of the side and front views. The modeling techniques used will be shaping in nurbs, converting to polygons to add details, and then into sub’ds to define the final shapes.

When the robot is finished we then move toward preparing our model for texturing. We do this by laying out the UV’s for all the separate parts of the body to make them flat so we can get a clean UV snap-shot for our painted textures. Tools covered in the layout section include planar map, cylindrical map, and automatic map, as well as move and sew UV’s. After the UV’s are finished and your snap-shot is taken we jump into a paint program to start adding color and texture to our model.

You will learn how to use layers for different areas as well as how to stain and chip up certain parts of the body, like the head and torso, for a more aged and scratched look. The last section covers how to texture a few of the nurbs surfaces of our character, such as the tubes, using Maya built-in shading networks. Once our character is all textured we will begin rigging by adding a skeleton to the geometry as well as parent parts of the body to certain joints so that the body parts move with the new skeleton. After our Robot has his joints we will begin adding Ik handles and more in-depth animation controls like foot rolls, as well as finger controls. The last stage of our tutorial covers basic key-frame animation where we move our robot in 3D space instead of a cycle where we would animate him in place. He will walk a bit and then pick up a small object. This will get you familiar with thinking about how the body of our robot would move and counter-balance to get more life-like animation.

Maya for Games: Modeling and Texturing Techniques with Maya and Mudbox
416 pages | Focal Press; Pap/DVD edition (October 17, 2008) | ISBN-10: 0240810643 | PDF | 26 Mb

Well-known Maya professional, Michael Ingrassia, takes readers through his unique style of modeling: “Image Based Modeling” where efficient, realistic models can be created very quickly. Ingrassia’s techniques allow modelers to create exact replicas of their concept characters or objects. The techniques presented are very efficient and allow game modelers to quickly build out stand alone props to populate environments and game levels.

Presented are tried and true techniques that the author has used successfully in game production for the past 10 years. Most, if not all 3D books, focus on basic “box” modeling techniques, which are the basis for proper 3D modeling but not the complete solution. In the author’s experience, students who have learned through the Image Based Modeling brand, have quickly excelled into effective modelers.
One of the hardest things for any modeler to do is match their model EXACTLY to the concept art or photos they are provided. The insider tips in this book walk artists through this process. Artists begin with basic modeling and advance to a creating a complete scene and set design/game level. Rather than including sporadic models with zero association from to one another, each model in the book becomes an integral part of an overall theme realistic in game development today.
The accompanying DVD includes 8 exclusive video tutorials on advanced Maya techniques as bonus tracks for artists providing invaluable modeling, rigging and texturing samples. Also, an in-depth video on assembling a “Killer Demo Reel” showing simple but effective video editing techniques used by the author so that artists can learn how to get their work seen. The book not only teaches effective methodology, but provides the user with impressive content for producing effective demo reels and portfolios. Pros and cons of demo reel, website and artist representation are given, along with insights into the expectations of game studios today. The video tutorials show users the finished product, and then run through the process of step by step creation of that particular technique.
–Author Ingrassia is a veteran artist and instructor (Senior Artist on several XBox game projects; and Senior Maya Instructor for Escape Studios in London, considered the top training academy in Europe; with game credits including Shadowrun (2007), Azurik: Rise of Perathia (2001), Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001), Electronic Arts, Inc.) He provides insider secrets, tips, and tricks so that artists can learn a wide variety of cutting-edge modeling and texturing techniques.
–The latest Next-Gen modeling techniques combined with “tried and true” processes provide a leg up for artists new to game work so that they can “hit the ground running” with professional results. + DVD with bonus videos on advanced modeling techniques.
–Game Industry professionals speak about their experiences and advice providing artists with candid, unique insights into the game industry (how they broke in, and how they stayed in).
–Coverage of Autodesk’s newly acquired MUDBOX software, so that artists can learn quick and effective sculpting techniques to make use of this exciting and powerful tool that can add a professional look to their models. (Ingrassia has been working with Mudbox for years – he recently gave a lecture on the tool at an animation festival in Prague. His expertise will come through in the book.)
