Karunanidhi warns LTTE sympathizers
Amidst signs of tension between the Congress and pro-LTTE parties, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday (25) warned of legal action against those functioning or speaking in support of banned organisations.
"The DMK does not support those who support organisations banned in India. If anyone speaks or acts in aid of such outfits, the DMK Government will not hesitate to act against them as per law," he said in a statement in Chennai. "This warning applies to all," he added.
Karunanidhi's remarks came in the backdrop of the Congress drawing the ire of some parties in Chennai for demanding the arrest of those making pro-LTTE utterances. When film director Seeman and Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam functionary Kolathur T.S. Mani were arrested recently, the Congress was accused of instigating terror.
The Chief Minister's statement comes in the wake of Congress leaders' demand that his Government take action against LTTE supporters following the attack on the TNCC headquarters in Chennai, allegedly by Viduthalai Chiruthigal Katchi (VCK) activists.
Congress Lok Sabha MP S.K. Karvendhan complained that his house in Dharapuram in Erode district had been attacked in the early hours by unidentified persons. Party flags in his house were burnt, he said.
Congress leaders had also been demanding arrest of VCK founder T. Thirumavalavan for his "pro-LTTE remarks."
Writing in the party mouthpiece Murasoli, Karunanidhi said DMK never supported any banned outfits or their supporters.
