MR to decide today on Presidential or General election
President Mahinda Rajapaksa is to meet government Minister and senior SLFP party members
this evening to decide if to hold a Presidential election or General election first,
Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told reporters.
He said a formal announcement on the decision will later be made.

Referendum: to decide whether to go for a presidential type of govt. or premier headed executive govt. in that case he can stay there for ever, lifetime executive head of state as he is precluded by this constitution to run for a third term. Seeking a two thirds majority from the people is ineffective because the system won't permit due to allocation of seats to small parties first. Presidential election with a common candidate is a foreign conspiracy if a rtd. general is a candidate, there are on the fence law makers to jump the other side when they come to know that uncle Sam says so, most of these politicians have one foot here and another foot in severe cold climes to return back when it is warm here!

president should declare a general election because he has another 2 years for his term to complete. in the event he goes for the presidential election, he gives a bad precedent to the people that he will be worried about only himself to remain in power. trust president will act wisely without listning to the opportunist ministers. rogues mps from unp who joined him only to fill their pockets will encourage him to go for presidential election as they will be no where if a general election is declared.

I do not see any rationale for MR to go for a Presidential Election now. But in 2yrs, MR will have a clean sweep securing more than 70%. We Sri lankans have a short memory, there will be no one to challenge him then, I mean no "GENERALS".

But I guess he should think and play the right card , i dont think people are un-happy with him and people are un-happy with how GOSL is run and other ministries . for sure we know some of the ministers whos going to loose .. so he might have a party pressure to go for PE ..

Whatever election, MR is due for a rude awakening. You can fool some of the people all the time and all the people some of the time...BUT you cannot fool all the people all the time..Now the time of reckoning is coming and the masses cannot be fooled .They can see the hypocrites at work, the poor and sorry state of the country that we live in whilst all the politicians and their friends and family live lives that of emperor's.It is the right time for the masses to decide what leadership the people want. One that will look after the welfare of the masses or the selfish welfare of looking after themselves only.
