Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Thilakarathna day before yesterday (13) issued a ban on production and sale of all the products of Edna Chocolate (Ceylon) Ltd. following a complaint of the Consumer Affairs Authority that the company used melamine contained milk powder imported from China.
More than 54,000 children had to undergo medical treatment as melamine was contained in milk food. World Health Organization has warned that melamine can cause urine infection, kidney failures and stone.
Consumer Affairs Authority stated in its complaint that a stock of milk powder imported from China without standard certificates were recovered when the stores complex of the Edna Chocolate Company were examined. Consumer Affairs Authority suspects that the milk powder contains melamine poisonous to people.
The specimens of this stock have been sent to Singapore for a chemical analysis. The Authority is waiting for the report to proceed with the future action.
The Magistrate issued the order to suspend the production and distribution of Edna Chocolates Company since their products can cause harm to people. The hearing was postponed to October 28.
Meanwhile, Switzerland has suspended import of Munchee Lemon Puff biscuits on suspicion that they contain melamine. However, there is no ban on Munchee products in Sri Lanka.
