A Kadugannawa resident stood on the roof of his car outside the People s Bank building at Daladaweediya in Kandy in protest over the police having failed to conduct a formal inquiry into the alleged abduction of his 25-year-old daughter.

The protestor who identified himself as Wilbert Dayananda of Kadugannawa alleged that some men travelling in a VIP vehicle abducted his daughter but the police were doing little or nothing to trace her daughter.

However the police rushed to the scene and took him to the Kandy police station for further investigations.

Police yesterday said it had no role to play in the matter involving a protest conducted by a man on the roof of a car in the middle of Kandy town, as the alleged abduction of his daughter had never occurred.

Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said investigations had revealed that the individual s 25-year-old daughter, who he claimed had been taken away by an official vehicle belonging to a prominent politician, had actually left willingly.

She is an adult and she has told the police she was being held by her father against her will and she wanted to go away with the man who the father alleged had abducted her. Therefore, there is nothing further for the police to do. It is a personal matter, he said, adding nothing illegal had taken place. She is 25 years old. If she was 15 or 16, that is another matter, he further added.

The individual, a resident of Kadugannawa, protested on Thursday (July 4) by climbing onto the roof of a car in Kandy town, claiming Kadugannawa police were not taking any action despite him complaining to the police that his daughter had been abducted. He was eventually persuaded to come down from the car roof on assurance that police would look into the matter.
