Microsoft: Vista Safer than OS X, Linux

Microsoft security strategy director Jeff Jones this week published a report comparing the security vulnerability profile for various high-profile operating systems in the 90 days of their existence. Surprisingly, Vista came out in front: Vista had 5 vulnerabilities in its first 90 days, one of them fixed, and one pending with a High severity rating. By comparison, XP had a total of 17 vulnerabilities in its first 90 days, 8 of which were rated High, when it shipped in 2001.

The surprises, however, come when you compare the non-Microsoft competition. Mac OS X 10.4, a darling of the press, actually suffered from 20 vulnerabilities in its first 90 days, 8 of which were rated High. Worse, OS X 10.4 still suffered from 17 publicly disclosed but unpatched vulnerabilities at the end of those 90 days. "The data doesn't support [Apple's] marketing," Jones writes. Linux fared even worse: Ubuntu 6.06 suffered from a whopping 71 vulnerabilities in its first 90 days, 27 of those rated High. And there were at least 29 unpatched vulnerabilities in that OS after the 90 day period ended. And so on. You can read the entire report (PDF), and look forward, as I am, to Jones' 6-month and 1-year updates.

Wonder how people get so many viruses. I've only had one infection and it was in 1998. No harm has come my way ever since. I come across trojans once in a while, but that too if I look for a crack.

Well, it's the detected vulnerabilities that matter. How can someone exploit one that's impossible to find

I think u r wrong abt dis. U can't say Vista is safer than Linux. bcos linux is nt static it improves dynamically. so many developers involved in it. so it gets better and better everyday..but vista is nt like this.

But this is not about repairing the vulnerabilities. This is about detected vulnerabilities. By whom they were detected, it doesn't matter.

Don't give stupid answers. How the hell do you know which file is a virus and which is not?

"Vulnerabilities" ha..ha..ha..  this is what Microsoft is so good at.... playing with words!!! I thought "BUGS" is more easier to spell and write!!

Anyway, I think you guys should stop arguing and read the article 1st, the article doesn't even give a clue about what's better Windows or Linux in fact it doesn't even touch that side!!!

This Microsoft guy says that Vista had fewer bugs than any other OS in the market within the 1st 90 days of release , I'm surprised if its not, because Vista has to learn from everybody's mistakes!!!

This is like comparing a 1980's Toyota Corolla's performance to a 2007 one!! He just says Vista had less problems within its first days than the other OS's had in their early days... of course it has to be that way cuz people pay for it!!!!

ha..ha... funny what Microsoft comes up with sometimes!!!

    It's not this bad :D
True. We can't compare Vista with XP or OSX. We'll see how things go with OSX Leopard ;)
