Troubled Mihin Air to be revamped[/FONT][FONT=Arial,sans-serif]

[FONT=Arial,sans-serif]Sri Lanka government has asked for another three billion rupees (US$28.2 million) in peoples' money from the next budget to buy 6 aircrafts to revamp the troubled Mihin Air. The airline has been grounded due to the two air crafts that were leased to launch it being taken away by the company from which they were rented due to nonpayment of the lease.

[FONT=Arial,sans-serif]Minister Chamal Rajapaksse has presented a cabinet paper for the're-structuring' of Mihin Air. According to the cabinet paper 6 A-60 aircrafts would be bought from China with a loan from a Chinese bank.

[FONT=Arial,sans-serif]Mihin air owes a large amount of money to several state institutions and there are accusations that the country has lost Rs.32,000 million as a result of the hasty decision to launch 'Mihin Air' by Rajapakse government.[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial,sans-serif]However, according to government sources next budget of the Rajapakse government to be presented in November would include allocations for 'Mihin Air.'

Mihin Lanka that has incurred more than Rs. three billion in losses since it began operations has called international tenders to acquire two aircraft on lease basis.
According to a senior official of the Ministry of Port and Aviation, the airline has sought a huge borrowing from the government to pay for the aircraft that are to be leased.
It had lost its earlier aircraft obtained on lease basis due to the non-payment of dues.
'Lankabusinessonline' website reported yesterday (Sept. 13th) the troubled budget carrier is to ask for another three billion rupees in peoples' money in the next budget to revive operations.
Meanwhile, sources said the request has been made by its new chief executive officer who replaced Sajin Vaas Gunawardena.
Gunawardena, a coordinating secretary to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has had no prior experience in a senior capacity or in an airline.
Mihin Air had a startup capital of Rs. 750 m, and later was given Rs. 500 m of SME Bank's money by Lankaputra Bank, without any bond.
