13 August, 2014
A group of Ministers and MPs today met the Mahanayakes (Chief Prelates) of the Asgiri and Malwathu chapters and briefed them on concerns being raised over the actions of monks attached to the Bodu Bala Sena.
The Ministers and MPs had told the Chief Prelates that the actions of the General Secretary of the BBS, the venerable Galagodaaththe Gnanasara thero, is not in line with what is expected of a monk.
Ministers Rajitha Senaratna, Mervyn Silva, Janaka Bandara Tenakoon and MP Thilanga Sumathipala were among those who met the Chief Prelates and raised their concerns.
Minister Senaratne said that the Chief Prelates gave their blessings for the Government to take action against monks who violate the law.
He said the Chief Prelates had also assured that they will take stern disciplinary action against any monk who violates Buddhist teachings.
The Minister said that the Chief Prelates had urged the Ministers to take action in order to protect Buddhism in the country.
Meanwhile Minister Mervyn Silva said that the Ministers are not acting against Galagodaaththe Gnanasara thero but only oppose his actions and the words he uses.
