Mobile phone use in private schools to be banned

The government is planning to ban private school students from taking mobile phones into their schools. This ban already applies to students attending government schools. The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission said it hopes to set up phone booths at these schools as an alternative so that the children could use them in an emergency.

Is the Govt. planning to implement Free Call Services, mobile phones are having facilities such as very economical out going calls & you don't need money on the spot, for phone booths u need money to use, and all the children may not have the required amount everytime. It is better be more strict in the schools by the in charge people in the school to control the Mobile phones.

The TRC could ban the usage of Mobiles in schools and as an alternative put up telephone booths. Will this solve this problem. The parents should play a more vigilant roles with their children to mould them into trustworthy obedient children. Why do children need GPRS facilities, Internet an email on mobiles. iF ever the parents provide a mobile to their children is to contact them in an emergency, however after the war ended the parents feel that the children are in a more secure environment hence the mobile phone is not necessary any more for school children. Its not the providing of a phone the question but what the children download and for what purpose they use the mobile, hence the parents should be more vigilant. - Ramzeel

Dear Commissioner, then what about the Government schools?? are you going to set the phone booths at the government schools also for emergency.

There are lot of pros & cons to argue on this matter. I totally agree that children do not need mobile phones inside schools. But one should not forget that quick communication between parents and kids has become very much necessary when they are at afterschool work (sports activities, tuition classes etc).

well done ! its nice to see some discipline coming into effect at last.

It is a very good move. Telephone booths should be provided to Govt. & Pvt. Schools. A child can keep a Rs.5 coin to use for an emergency to contact the parent.

Is the issue the Mobile phone or Communication the question. This is a battle that cannot be won by banning mobile phone use in schools only, it is a battle that can only be won by very responsible parenting. See the issue is that content of what is on a childs phone that matters not just carrying the phone.

how can this be a smart move?, intelegent parents will not allow their sons and daughters to have mobile phones. what can govt could do for unfortunate incidents for calessness parents. You cannot force anything? most of the schools have banned phones, but still students bring. How??

what this MAMA need is not clear. he wants children to have mobile phones? these phone booth calls are taken in urgent matters only. no need to call home for chidlren everytime. when we are at school, we do not use to call home everytime. school is our second home.school phones are there for emergency purpsoses. mobile phones creates many unnecessary problems among student. so, we like if children use only phone booth instead of mobile phone. money is not matter with school children with these days.also borrowing is possible. if we are going to check each & every things, we cannot impose good laws in our country.

Hardly ever our politicians or government authorities release any sensible statements. Will ever the payphone booth allow the parents to contact their children?

hehe and you thought there was light at the end of the tunnel in Sri lanka:D nice comment by uni, i hope ppl start electing smart ppl into government soon

Whats the big deal here? Why should the government get involved in this? This should be left for the parents to decide whether the child has a mobile phone or not. The government should curb the violence taking place in the Universities. If the parents have no objection to their children having a mobile, it should not be the concern of the government. Phone booths do not work most of the time they are vandalized and the parents have no way of contacting a child in an emergency via a phone booth.

Dear Mr. Mohamed Imthiyas, Read the full article and post your comment after that. It's alreadybanned in Government schools. Mr. Mama, May be you don't know that most of the schools have security officers and Prefects. They can do this job and you don't have to worry about this. I was trying to say this is a good move from the educational ministry.

Well i gave a pretty simple mobile phone to my kid. Can dial only 5 numbers. No GPRS. No internet, Just Rs 3,500 small phone. I can contact him when ever i want. He can contact the given 5 numbers by family. No one else. But yes i have to take the risk of unknown ppl might call him / text him. Some times life do not give us too many options.

Restrictions on Internet, and now banning mobile phones for students. Are we heading for a dictatorship monitored by the Big Brother? Doesnt the government have other priorities rather than infringing on the rights of people.
