A tragedy was reported from the Sri Jayawardenapura Municipal Council where the Council Member B. Siripala Cooray met with a tragic death just minutes after he was sworn in as a member of the council yesterday.
Mr. Cooray was sworn-in for the vacancy created by the demise of M. Soysa who died of natural causes earlier.
He was about to enter the chambers of the Municipal Council when he suddenly fell on the floor. It was later reported that he died of heart attack.
Kotte Mayor R. M. Swarnalatha who confirmed Mr. Cooray’s death said she was informed of the tragedy while she was engaged in a religious observance at the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy.
“I was shocked to hear about his death,” she said.
